A man in Midland, Texas shot and killed an intruder who attempted to break into his residence on Tuesday night, the Midland Reporter-Telegram reports. The intruder was armed with a baseball bat.

Police in Midland responded to the shooting at around midnight on Tuesday where they found 32-year-old Samuel Pompa with a shotgun wound to the chest. He was transported to Midland Memorial Hospital where he later died from his injuries, according to a press release from the city’s public information officer.

Police say Pompa tried to break into the residence of a 19-year-old who was living in a different unit but at the same address as him. It was likely an apartment complex, however, the reports did not confirm that.

The victim in the case told police that he used his shotgun to protect himself and others in his residence after Pompa tried to gain entry armed with a baseball bat. Police have not arrested anyone in connection with Pompa’s death.

“An autopsy will be conducted, and after it is completed the case will be sent to the District Attorney’s Office,” the Reporter-Telegram adds.

A 76-year-old gun safety instructor accidentally discharged his weapon in the cafeteria of Minnesota’s Salem Lutheran Church and School. The instructor resigned following the incredibly ironic incident.

According to the police report, someone in the class approached the instructor with a question about a 1911 Colt 45 handgun that was safely locked away in the instructor’s gun case. The instructor then picked up the gun and used it as a visual aide while answering the question. To his credit, the instructor properly followed the National Rifle Association’s first rule of gun safety: Always keep the gun pointed in a safe direction. The instructor kept the gun pointed away from the eight children and their parents who were present.

And it’s a good thing that he did – the handgun discharged. Luckily, nobody was injured. The bullet penetrated the wall of the cafeteria.  

The problem is that the instructor missed one of the other commandments of gun safety: Always assume that all guns are loaded. The instructor told police that he “assumed the weapon was empty."

The Stillwater City Attorney’s Office chose not to press any charges following positive testimonials from the parents. Despite the adrenaline-pumping scare, the parents acknowledged that the gun was never pointed towards anyone and that the instructor exercised “good muzzle control.”

The instructor was also profusely apologetic. He told police and school officials, “You gentlemen can’t imagine the embarrassment I feel towards myself for what took place. I am completely sorry for the incident that took place.”

In a perverse sort of way, the instructor actually did his job. He successfully demonstrated the importance of gun safety, though the students and parents probably would have preferred pie charts and a cautionary tale instead of a live demonstration. Regardless, the incident served as a lesson that those students and parents won’t soon forget.

Gun manufacturers in Connecticut have come out swinging against Gov. Dannel P. Malloy for what they claim are slanderous statements that have led to a hostile work environment.
The backlash focuses on Mr. Malloy's early April interview on CNN, in which he accused the gun industry of putting profits above all else, the Los Angeles Times reported.
"What this is about is the ability of the gun industry to sell as many guns to as many people as possible, even if they're deranged, even if they're mentally ill, even if they have a criminal record. They don't care," he said on CNN.
Gun makers were incensed,
The Los Angeles Times said the National Shooting Sports Foundation has demanded an apology. And O.F. Mossberg & Sons, the oldest family-owned gun manufacturer in America, called the comments "slanderous" to its 270 workers. The company, through its attorney, has penned a letter to the governor.
"To set the record straight, our company and our employees have gone on record at public hearings and with our elected legislators as stating that the single biggest thing this state can do to stop the criminal misuse of firearms is to prevent access to firearms by prohibited or other at-risk individuals," said the attorney, Joseph Bartozzi, in the letter to the government, the Los Angeles Times reported. Mr. Malloy's comments "came across as insulting and slanderous to our employees ... and appear to be politically motivated."
The governor, the Los Angeles Times reported, isn't apologizing, and Mossberg manufacturing is considering an exit from the state, Mr. Bartozzi said.
"At a time when we are being encouraged to move our manufacturing facility to any one of several states, your words have made us feel ... deeply unappreciated," he said in the Los Angeles Times.

POMPANO BEACH (CBS4) – Ammunition sellers and manufacturers say there’s been a run on bullets and they can’t keep their shelves stocked.

Jeff Dillard who runs National Armory in Pompano says it’s the worst he’s ever seen.

“I have never seen ammo so impossible to get,” said Dillard.

He said demand for ammunition has been growing and spiked over the past couple of days.

“Because of the terrorist attacks and the gun control legislation people are getting in more of a panic situation,” Dillard said.

When he can get bullets,  Dillard says, they’re expensive.

“We paid five times the price we would normally pay,” he said, adding that it isn’t just ammunition running low, he can’t even get the parts to make bullets.  “All our vendors are telling us not only are they out of stock but some are two to three million bullet-heads in back-order. They won’t even take our orders because they don’t know when they’ll be able to fill them.”

 Ammunition manufacturer Andy Delatorre says can hardly keep up with ammunition orders, but the shortage on parts has hurt his business so much he had to lay off four people last month.

“We have had to shut down 50 percent of manufacturing process. People are out on street without jobs right now. We just can’t find enough raw material,” he said.

Ammunition manufacturers and sellers say they see no end in sight to the demand for bullets. “A lot of the distributors and suppliers are telling us it could be 2-3 months before we can get an ample supply of ammo and all that’s going to do is to drive up the prices,” said Dillard.
